Kruščica i Mandalina

Both of these settlement are on the coast, and they had a mutual cemetery on the mountain (at Ljubotić), and hence the mirilo stones are located along paths leading from various directions in their vicinity. In the area of Kruščica and Mandalina both along the coast and in the mountains are hamlets that also used the cemetery of Ljubotić for burial. As they were still in function up to the 1970s, they were not so subject to devastation and decline, and they are one of the best preserved group of stones in the southern Velebits.

The Mirilo Stones of Kruščica families (at “među Klancin”)
They are located alongside the old trail that leads from Kruščica to the cemetery of Ljubotić, thirty some meters above the mirilo stones of Korito. They are located on both sides of the path, and they belonged to the Trošelj and Sjauš families from Kruščica. This site was the longest in function throughout the entire Velebit, as is shown not merely by the dates carved into the headstones, but also the building techniques. Construction was modernized from the mid 20th century, and instead of building in the dry-stone technique mortar was used (lime and cement). In this manner the mirilo stones became more permanent, as the slabs were more tightly connected, and they were precisely and regularly carved. The skillful carver(s) emphasized the symbolism of the mirilo with a firm and permanent structure, while neglecting the symbolism of decorating the headstone. There are almost no more complicated marks than an ordinary cross, alone or with an inscription. The slabs are rectangular, up to 50 cm in height, some made of white stone (of the type from Brač Island), which is unusual, since all the rest are of the limestone found in situ. They are oriented west - east with a fine view of the vicinity of Ljubotić. Most of the inscriptions bear the full fi rst and last name of the deceased, the dates of birth and death, while a smaller number have merely initials and the date of death.
