Samardžići

The Samardžić family was sett led in Dolac near Jabukovac, and their mirilo stones were located by the elementary school, below the Jusupi mirilo stones. The family moved to Slavonia between the 1st and 2nd World Wars, and their property was taken over by the Nekić family from Bravar (Dolac Nekića).

The mirilo stones no longer exist, but by chance two headstones have been preserved, the most interesting ones from the entire Velebit. The fi rst one, recumbent, was of a stele or cippus type 75 cm high and 56 cm wide, worked like a Roman stele, with deeply incised lett ers resembling the Roman majuscule script, but the inscription cannot be deciphered because the skillful stone carver was probably either semi-literate in the Latin script or the lett ers were actually symbols from some other script. The second headstone had the usual dimensions of 36 cm in height and 24 cm in width and still stands in its original position, fi rmly embedded in the soil. It is square in shape with a simple cross at the top and the year of death of the deceased (1825). These headstones represent masterpieces of rustic art.
